WHEN Enigin Partners come to our offices in Cornwall, UK, for a week’s residential commercial training course we get feedback on their hopes and goals for their new energy saving businesses.
They are generally very similar, they wish to be successful as entrepreneurs in their new venture, they want to help local companies to save costs, boost profits and save the environment but occasionally there are other concerns.
Last month we had a partner from an eastern European country whose goals match those of the others but with another very important wish – to see a consistent, regular supply of electricity in his home town.
He explained to everyone present in the Enigin classroom that in his home city they have four hours of domestic electricity supply then two hours blackout regularly throughout the day.
How can he help his town as Enigin provide energy saving for businesses not for domestic use?
Apparently a large industrial plant, which supports the local economy and hence is very important, has to have a constant supply and due to a lack of capacity the civilian portion of the city is generally “switched-off” on a regular basis.
Can you imagine that? Every four hours you lost power for two hours, imagine how that would affect your life? You would have to plan all your activities around that schedule of power outages.
If you recall news of power outages in large metropolitan areas, such as London and New York in recent years, that cause mayhem. The underground rail system stops, elevators do not elevate, traffic signals are in the dark as is street lighting.
How much of the world’s economy relies on a regular electricity supply to run all the technology. It highlights how we in the more advanced world take a regular supply of electricity for granted, yet that could change in the future, if we don’t change.
The BBC (bbc.co.uk) reported yesterday that some energy experts reckon that within 10 years the UK could suffer from regular blackouts. They said the UK government has dithered for too long over policies vital to energy and climate security. That sentiment is echoed in many other countries.
What was our east European Enigin Partner suggesting he do to help his community?
He wanted to install Enigin’s Eniscope monitoring system and implement the Enigin Solution in local businesses, particularly the industrial corporation. This would help to even-out the power demand from business, saving them money, helping their profitability, protecting the environment and jobs but also reducing the demand for that valuable power, allowing the town to stay “switched-on”.
Yes, we are all concerned, or should be, about the environment, saving energy and costs hence protecting profits and jobs but lifestyles are also affected by energy use to a greater and lesser degree.
Let’s hope that responsible use and the appropriate solutions can help all to enjoy a better future.
