ALL over the globe people walk out of their workplace thinking that someone else will turn out the lights, so leading to equipment and lighting left on, they no doubt rationalise that it’s just a few lights it can’t make that much of a difference.
Yes we all know that leaving lights and other equipment running wastes energy, we have even been educated that leaving something on stand-by wastes energy, yet many of us struggle to change our bad habits.
In these harsh financial times wasted energy could be a death-knell to a business, jobs and also the long term future of the planet. But do a few lights left on really make much of a difference?
The following experience demonstrates how Enigin’s sophisticated energy meter Eniscope, helps people to realise where there is energy waste and reveals what savings can be made, even when it is mainly the lights that are left on.
At the end of January 2009 an Enigin Partner in Western Europe installed an Eniscope into the local Business Training Centre, E-Learning.
The Centre provides office accommodation and training services to small and start-up businesses.
When our Partner studied the real-time data and historical graphs produced by the Eniscope, he noticed that around 40% of electricity usage was during the evening and night hours, when the premises were unoccupied.
During the first week of February 2009 the Partner performed a brief evening energy-walk around of the Centre at 7.30pm.
“All the occupants had left for the day so on the walk around the building it was noticeable that all the lights remained on in the shared and public areas. There was also an electric heater on in a corridor area,” stated the Enigin Partner.
After the lights and heating was switched off and the Eniscope data was re-analysed it was immediately apparent that major savings could be made.
The Enigin Partner explained: “The energy cost for the hours 8.00pm to 8.00am the following morning, were reduced by an incredible 87%.
“With weekends also included, allowing for partial usage on Saturday’s, the savings would be a staggering €4585 per year. All that from just making sure everything is turned off,” the Enigin Partner concluded.
The Eniscope makes the invisible, visible as real-time plus historical graphical data of the energy use within a site, or even for an individual unit of equipment, can be analysed and acted upon.
This simple case in Europe highlights a no-cost energy saving. It may seem obvious that there is energy wastage when lights and heaters are left running over night, but the Eniscope shows the reality of the situation and provides the data and details to show how much energy and money is being wasted.
Being able to see the energy and money wasted will motivate people to act, the Eniscope allows people to see the savings which drives them to react and change those bad habits that will impact on their life and the future.
