According to the FT the attention of the US was captured when it was announced that the Empire State Building in Manhattan was to embark on a $500m retrofit to make it more energy-efficient.
The retrofit includes amongst other items high-tech lighting, furnaces and air conditioners, plus replacement of thousands of windows with better insulated ones and is expected to reduce the building’s energy use by almost 40 per cent.
Branko Terzic, the energy and resources regulatory policy leader for consultancy Deloitte said, “You have one of the marquee buildings in the United States demonstrating an old building can increase its energy efficiency,” He also stated that he felt such high-profile efforts were helping to make energy efficiency “cutting edge”..
The FT also states that the global potential for energy efficiency is vast.
